Work begins on latest phase of award-winning scheme
Muse Developments has commenced the latest phase of development on the award-winning Smithfield regeneration scheme, in the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
Muse has appointed Galliford Try, the leading house building and construction company, to undertake the sixth phase of the project – the largest single development site within the Northern Quarter. This will include the construction of 77 one, two and three bedroom apartments and over 6,000 sq ft of ground floor commercial space.
Muse has also committed to an initial stage of sensitive shell restoration and refurbishment of the Grade 2 listed building, known locally as the ‘Mackie Mayor’. These final two phases will conclude the comprehensive mixed-use development, which began on site in 2001.
Wes Erlam, senior development surveyor at Muse, said: “We’re delighted to be in a position to progress the final two phases of a scheme we have been committed to for over a decade. We have worked extensively with our partners at Manchester City Council, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and English Heritage to create a viable development that will result in a high quality contemporary residential building that complements the previous phases, while sensitively transforming the ‘Mackie Mayor’ building into something that has great, future potential.”
The Smithfield scheme, which is due to be completed in September 2014, is being delivered by Ician Developments Limited – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Muse Developments – in partnership with Manchester City Council. The HCA invested £6.5 million towards the scheme, as part of the ‘Get Britain Building’ programme.
