50% affordable final phase at Islington Wharf starts on site
Urban waterfront regenerator, Waterside Places (the strategic joint venture between Muse Developments and Canal & River Trust), Latimer (the development arm of Clarion Housing Group) and contractor, Morgan Sindall Construction, have joined together on site to celebrate the start of the fourth and final phase of homes at its Islington Wharf development in the heart of Ancoats.
The landmark scheme – designed by Ryder Architecture - on the corner of Great Ancoats Street and Old Mill Street, will bring forward 106 one and two-bedroom apartments over two buildings at 11 and 16 storeys, with 54 homes available through shared ownership and the remaining 52 homes for private sale. This final phase will also feature 3,035 sq ft of ground-floor retail space for Sainsbury’s along with extensive landscaping, limited car parking and high-quality secure cycle storage facilities to encourage active travel.
Tom Webber, senior development manager at Waterside Places, said: “We’re really proud to have significantly contributed to the transformation and positive regeneration of the area.”
“The final phase of Islington Wharf represents the last part of Waterside Places’ ambitious masterplan that began in 2005 to create, and then add to the vibrant community by developing much-needed affordable homes close to the city centre, as well as bringing forward public spaces along the banks of Ashton Canal for everyone to enjoy.”
Richard Cook, group director of development for Clarion Housing Group, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Waterside Places to bring affordable homes to the centre of Manchester, enabling people to get onto the property ladder and benefit from all the city has to offer. It was exciting to visit the site and see how far the rest of the scheme has come and we’re looking forward to seeing the fourth and final phase of Islington Wharf take shape.”
Shaun Jones, Greater Manchester area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “It was a pleasure to join our project partners to celebrate our work starting on site at Islington Wharf.
“Ancoats is one of the great success stories of Manchester in recent years. The Islington Wharf development and the manner in which it dovetails with the rich heritage of its surrounding environment has been pivotal in helping make it perhaps the most stylish area of the city. We look forward to helping complete this latest chapter in Manchester’s development.”
The wider Islington Wharf development has brought forward 348 much-needed city centre, waterside homes, ranging from one-bedroom apartments, to four-bedroom family townhouses that are innovatively and sympathetically designed to blend both the heritage of the area and its future; boasting high-quality features throughout.
