English Cities Fund (ECf) and Muse are working with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and Network Rail to regenerate a significant city centre site comprising 17 acres of largely derelict land and railway sidings immediately adjacent to Westgate Station and the Civic Quarter.
The first phase created a new commercial quarter in Wakefield’s city centre, with 90,000 sq ft of offices, retail and leisure space, 66 apartments and a £9 million investment in infrastructure and public realm. A new 1,451 space multi storey car park has also been provided immediately adjacent to the railway station.
The second phase – ‘Wakefield One’, a five-storey office building for the Council adjacent to the Grade 1 listed County Hall – was completed in 2011.
