Work has started on the £300 million housing and regeneration scheme at Northshore on the banks of the River Tees in Stockton just five days after the successful completion of legal and funding agreements was announced.

Construction at the 23-hectare riverside has begun with a first phase residential development of 50 high quality two-, three- and four-bedroom terraced and semi-detached homes.

Muse senior development surveyor, Simon Dew, leader of Stockton Council, Councillor Ken Lupton, and Stockton Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor Bob Cook, marked the start on site by breaking the ground at this first phase of development. 

They were joined by Chris Munro, area manager for the Home and Communities Agency (HCA) which has provided £3 million in funding for the first building phase, and both Mike Rytwinski and Simon Hogg from housing regeneration specialist, Lovell, which is working as joint venture partner with Muse for this first phase.

Bob Cook said, “It is fantastic to see our vision for the regeneration of Northshore begin to become a reality and I’m looking forward to see the development progress and the transformation of the riverside take shape."

Councillor Ken Lupton added, “The Council is strongly committed to the regeneration of Stockton Borough. The Northshore development is another exciting and integral contribution to Stockton’s wider regeneration plans which will benefit existing residents, and residents who may move to the area in future, for many generations.”

The former heavy industrial and shipbuilding site close to Stockton town centre has been the subject of a major remediation programme funded by the HCA and supported by Stockton Council, and already features the award-winning Infinity Bridge.

Chris Munro said, “Our £20 million investment in preparing the Northshore site for development has turned a post-industrial wasteland into a development opportunity which can help drive the local economy forward.  Muse’s scheme can now build on this platform as the next stage in Northshore’s development is a focus for homes, jobs and learning opportunities to benefit both Stockton and the wider Tees Valley.”

A sales centre marketing the various homes available in phase one will be open in August.
